Riverside Park

No work for us today; the weather is just too pleasant. It's looking very much like fall only with summertime temperatures. Jump in the car, 15 minutes to town, and then we're at the park. The river is so low right now that we are able to walk along the shore quite easily (I won't bore you with the controversial details).

My husband is walking ahead.
The seagulls are sitting on sandbars.

We go under the bridge and then onto a trail that runs parallel to the river. Tomorrow I'll post some pictures from the trail.

Black Meadowhawk Dragonfly (S. danae)

(please click on the image for better viewing)
It was great to see this Meadowhawk the other day basking in the sun. We have been lucky this year, and have had no hard frost yet. But, the nights are getting colder, and these amazing little dragonflies will not survive much longer. I'll keep looking for them though while there are still a few more warm days in the forecast.

Harvest Time

For the past month the squirrels have been very active.
This one spent a great deal of time nipping the birch tree seed cones and letting them fall to the ground. For days he could be seen jumping from branch to branch and scurrying about almost in a frenzy.
One morning, not too long ago, I saw this unusual sight - a mushroom lying upside down on a spruce bough. Squirrel again, this time harvesting mushrooms and putting them in the sun to dry.
Now, how clever is that?

These were taken just the other day when I noticed some rustling and bending of branches in the saskatoon berry bushes. This little chipmunk wasn't going to let anyone with a camera disturb her berry picking, and I was able to take a couple of zoomed in photos.
Yes, Autumn is well on its way!

Clouds Around the Mountain

This is what greeted us one morning while on our camping holiday in British Columbia's southern interior. It was a bit damp and cool, but fortunately for us, we were in a cozy camper and not a tent. The gloomy and lowered sky lasted for most of the day, and then we had nice weather. I didn't mind the clouds too much. It was fascinating to watch them move over the mountains, and we couldn't have had a better vantage point for viewing nature's splendor. The campground is situated on a hill and overlooks the highway, river and railroads.

More wonderful skies here.

Canyon Railroad

The freight train engineers are awfully brave doing their day to day job of driving through this canyon. Far below them is the river.

Trekking Canine

These photos were taken during a recent camping trip.
Our little companion, who is 13 1/2 years old, goes everywhere with us. She's getting on in years but still enjoys all of her walks. On this day we walked a section of an historic wagon road that was used in the 1800s to bring people and freight to the gold fields.

A rest at the top of an incline.

Sky Watch - August Rainbow

I took this photo of a rainbow just before I went on vacation but didn't have a chance to post it until now. It was almost eight o'clock in the evening and raining lightly. It was really more of a sun shower because a few minutes after the rain began, the sun came out. I looked out the window and was enjoying the radiance of the sun shining on the trees when a wonderful rainbow appeared in the sky. I didn't notice it at the time, but in the photo there is another very faint rainbow above the one I saw.

Many delightful skies can be seen at Sky Watch Friday
