Elusive Forest Dweller

The Pileated Woodpecker
(see Monday's post)

was here at the base of a tree

When I was preparing Monday's post and doing some research, I came across an interesting fact about the holes they make in trees. The article said that they are rectangular in shape. I was a bit skeptical after reading this, but when I actually looked closely at the holes, some of them do confirm this information.

The Pileated Woodpecker was first commonly known as the Logcock. There is a fascinating article about its life history here.
