I didn't have to go far to see this sunrise one morning recently. Looking out the window I had seen only glimpses of it between the trees, but...

Since I was up anyway I thought I might as well go for an early morning walk with my dog and properly greet the sun coming up over the horizon. Still, I was feeling a bit sluggish and had to rely on my feet to automatically get me to the front of the driveway. My happy little dog, on the other hand, was a bundle of energy. From the driveway, I started walking toward the first corner of our half mile rural road.

There is a corridor at this corner, a swath someone cut years ago. It gave me a wonderful focus point, and stopping partway I took this photo.

Sky Watch - Sunrise

Sometimes I like to go out to a clearing not far from our house and watch the sun come up over the horizon. I am always glad that I resisted the temptation to remain in bed after witnessing this remarkable and stirring event.

Sky Watch

I had woken up too early and then couldn't get back to sleep. It usually helps if I read a little, but when I passed by the window on my way downstairs and looked out, I saw splashed across the eastern sky the most marvelous colours, and I wanted badly to take a few pictures.

There were too many trees where I was, and it meant I would have to go down the road apiece if I wanted a clearer view. I felt a bit apprehensive. I don't normally go for a walk at five in the morning, and I was hoping that I wouldn't meet any four-legged beasts with big teeth. I wasn't really worried about anything else.

My dog was willing, and off we went.

Early Morning Light

I am up early these days. The sky was just beginning to lighten when I went outside with my camera. I was soon greeted by a panorama of sensational colours that changed moment by moment, muted at first and then radiant, the sky awash with the dawning of the day.

North - 7:05 a.m.

East 7:08 a.m.

South - 7:09 a.m.

West - 7:11 a.m.

Sunrise for a new month beginning

At Sunrise

Now the stars have faded
In the purple chill,
Lo, the sun is kindling
On the eastern hill.

Tree by tree the forest
Takes the golden tinge,
As the shafts of glory
Pierce the summit's fringe.

Rock by rock the ledges

As the tide of splendor

*Well-known Canadian poet who was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Many of his beautiful poems have a nature theme, and I remember being first introduced to his poetry in elementary school.
