On most mornings recently, we have been privileged to see the Canada Geese fly over the house. We don't see them at first; there is only a distinct sound in the distance that builds to an exhilarating pitch as the flocks pass above the trees and head towards the water.

Sky Watch - Sunlit Trees

These are chilly days in the north. I took these photos late one afternoon when the sun's rays lit up the trees at the eastern edge of the forest. The two hardy birds you see are both finches - the larger one is a male Pine Grosbeak and the one perched on a branch below is a Redpoll.

It was an eerie sunset this evening.

There is some slash burning going on in the distance, and the smoke has tainted the atmosphere for miles around. We first saw the fires when we were coming home from the city.

The moon tonight is almost 3/4 full.

Sky Watch - Winter Arrives

It has been a very snowy week with Tuesday morning being especially nice....every spruce tree decorated with huge dollops, the bare branches and twigs of the poplars outlined in white and above the charmed landscape, a promising blue sky.

Later, a breeze came up, and the snow flew off the trees in a blinding whirlwind.

It's wintertime!!!

We were driving across the bridge last Sunday when we saw a Bald Eagle perched below the topmost branches of this poplar tree. It's an ideal spot for sitting and contemplating the water as it flows under the bridge....

with the warmth of the sun on his or her face.

Sky Watch - Heralding Spring

I took this series of photos just north of town where farms and fields stretch in all directions. High above me were the Trumpeter Swans. This is the annual spring migration, and these amazing birds have already travelled far, en route to Alaska and their summer nesting areas. They will grace our skies for a mere few weeks before instinct tells them that it is time to leave.

Sky Watch - A Patch of Blue

The weather has been very changeable lately. One minute I'm having a pleasant walk, and the next minute the wind has risen and grey clouds have moved in, darkening the sky. On this particular day little pellets of sleet rained down also. However, I did manage to get a picture of this little patch of blue before it was blocked out entirely.

Clouds Around the Mountain

This is what greeted us one morning while on our camping holiday in British Columbia's southern interior. It was a bit damp and cool, but fortunately for us, we were in a cozy camper and not a tent. The gloomy and lowered sky lasted for most of the day, and then we had nice weather. I didn't mind the clouds too much. It was fascinating to watch them move over the mountains, and we couldn't have had a better vantage point for viewing nature's splendor. The campground is situated on a hill and overlooks the highway, river and railroads.

Sky Watch - August Rainbow

I took this photo of a rainbow just before I went on vacation but didn't have a chance to post it until now. It was almost eight o'clock in the evening and raining lightly. It was really more of a sun shower because a few minutes after the rain began, the sun came out. I looked out the window and was enjoying the radiance of the sun shining on the trees when a wonderful rainbow appeared in the sky. I didn't notice it at the time, but in the photo there is another very faint rainbow above the one I saw.
